@james.near [Posted on DevHub](https://near.social/#/devgovgigs.near/widget/Post?id=1469) ## Solution: BOS Fellowship Proposal ###### Requested amount: 25875 USDT ###### Requested sponsor: @neardevgov.near *This post is a fellowship proposal that follows the [DevDAO Fellowship Program](https://near.social/devgovgigs.near/widget/gigs-board.pages.Post?id=540).* **Summary:** monthly budget requested for hiring experienced contributors to build productivity tools and other solutions that help BOS developers ### Introduction My name is James Waugh, and I worked for NEAR as a community manager from 2020 to 2022. This year, I’ve organized programs for BOS developers including the [Near Social Hackathon](https://near.social/mob.near/widget/MainPage.Post.Page?accountId=hack.near&blockHeight=86920148), [BOS Academy](https://academy.near.social), and [BOS Hacks](https://boshacks.com). I’m currently leading Developer Relations for Banyan, supporting regional communities in our global ecosystem. ##### Background / Context [Near Builders Cooperative](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ViQM-aSptllLbx7UVkEp3QbMflDcQ56E_XnoPB9SHw8/edit?usp=sharing) engages developer communities everywhere to share knowledge, coordinate, and learn together. Our mission is to increase accessibility of blockchain technology, enhance quality of experience for builders, and cultivate successful open web applications. ### Focus Areas We request a budget for this dedicated fellowship of builders working on the Blockchain Operating System (BOS). Open-source contributors are fundamental to growing healthy developer communities on the BOS. However, builders may find it challenging to get started, especially if they don’t have a good first experience initially. This fellowship would address these challenges by focusing on productivity and collaboration tools (designed to be compatible with every gateway): * [Workspace](https://github.com/near-everything/bos-workspace): for developing BOS applications ~ both on mainnet and locally * [Component Libraries](https://near.social/devgovgigs.near/widget/gigs-board.pages.Post?id=380): for organizing projects / apps to be more accessible * `everything` ~ [Types](https://everything.dev): for creating more modular platforms that empower creativity * `create` ~ [Projects + Docs](https://near.social/createit.near/widget/home): for managing the docs of specific projects and BOS itself using Near Social * `gitbos` ~ [On-chain Pull Requests](https://near.social/hack.near/widget/send): for supporting on-chain attribution, engagement, and collaboration * [Code Generators](https://near.social/devgovgigs.near/widget/gigs-board.pages.Post?id=511): for providing no-code solutions to help builders across verticals * [SDKs](https://near.social/#/mattb.near/widget/LensSDK): for integrating with external libraries and ecosystem projects ***Approach:** We plan to leverage a unique [on-chain type system](https://near.social/#/devgovgigs.near/widget/gigs-board.pages.Post?id=432) for data with customizable templates, which makes it easier for anyone to create anything. Why on-chain? As a result, things are more composable and customizable.* ### Objectives * Community → recognizing and rewarding builders who help each other succeed * Education → empowering mentors to share resources with promising contributors * Development → curating libraries of examples, tools, templates, and other things ##### Scope * Supporting a community of builders, mentors, and educators around the world * Gathering feedback and improving the overall experience for BOS developers * Organizing components into categories and curating useful resource libraries ##### Timeline Our proposed timeline for this fellowship is 6 months, including Q4 of this year and Q1 of next year. Prior to NEARCON, we will share an update with our initial report and ideas / plans for 2024. ##### Deliverables * BOS Workspace + Toolkit * Coordinate with Hackbox to develop “Getting Started” content / resources * Documentation, Examples, and Tutorials: [docs.near.org/bos](https://docs.near.org/bos) * Component Library System: [nearbuilders.com/library](https://www.nearbuilders.com/library) * Gateway-agnostic, On-chain JSON and JavaScript Editor Components (Monaco) * Community Programs via Build DAO * Mentorship * Office Hours * Code Reviews * Meetups * Virtual Workshops * Hackathons * Open Sprints * Builder Badges ##### Key Results * Onboarding process refined for volunteers and paid contributors * Effective contribution guidelines created to support library system * 50+ BOS fellows certified (with badges on their profiles) * 20+ SDKs and integrations made for app developers * 80+ quality component libraries curated and published * 300+ builders who have shipped at least one valuable component * 1000+ builders who have shipped at least one component ### Budget We’re asking DevDAO to reserve $25,875 USDC / month for fellowship rewards. Details below: We assume a Software Engineer with a level of expertise equivalent to [Amazon SDE-II](https://www.levels.fyi/companies/amazon/salaries/software-engineer/levels/sde-ii/locations/greater-seattle-area) can become self-sufficient within two months. According to levels.xyz, base compensation for someone at this level is $55,000 / year in Eastern Europe, $83,000-112,000 / year in Western Europe, and $150,000-185,000 / year in the U.S. We will balance the budget according to the Developer Governance funding guidelines while ensuring fair compensation for contributors. With a monthly budget of $22,500 USDC ($180,000 / 12 * 0.5 * 3), we can reward at least 3 active part-time contributors from the US or 5-9 part-time contributors from elsewhere. We can scale it to more contributors in the upcoming months, but we would like to start with 3-5. After 3-6 months, we hope active contributors will become successful fellowship leaders themselves. We believe our success should be defined through the success of the builders we support. Therefore, we’d like to request a reward for leaders equivalent to 15% of rewards earned by contributors in their first 3 months and 10% of those rewards over the next 6 months, while guiding them to become independent maintainers and fellowship leaders. With the $22,500 USDC budget for the contributors' rewards and 15% reward for leaders, the total requested budget is $25,875 USDC, which would be released directly to contributors after they submit contribution reports to be reviewed and hopefully approved by fellowship leaders. ##### Required Skills and Experience We are seeking contributors with the following skills and experience: * Familiarity with BOS dev environment * Knowledge about NEAR protocol, SDKs, etc. * Programming skills (JavaScript and React) * Education / teaching experience * Developer relations expertise ### Conclusion Our fellowship proposal is aligned with the vision of DevDAO and NEAR: building a better future in which all people control their assets, data, and the power of governance. Together, we will empower contributors and make it easier to build anything on a blockchain.
