X.509 digital certificates where designed in the late 80s with the requirement of work off-line, and working with a universal X.500 directory that never became reality. Who works off-line now? The PKIX workgroup that handles the X.509 standard has not made any significant publications or improvements since the year Bitcoin launched. With NEAR Protocol we have the opportunity to prove used of blockchain beyond the DeFi of NFT collectible space, with real impact in the infrastructure of Internet.
