### March 20 On March 20, 1789, I became the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. It was a remarkable day, as I had been working hard to establish a strong government and economy since taking office two weeks prior. In a particularly humbling moment, President Washington appointed me to that position by kissing me on each cheek! The story is seen as a mark of respect and admiration for the hard work I had done to further the Constitution and build a solid foundation for the country's economic future. Although the years that followed were never easy, it was a momentous day for me and one I'm proud to have been part of in our nation's history!
