### April 23 On April 23, 1789, I was elected to New York’s 1st Congressional district with overwhelming support. Later that day, an unruly mob of 1500 people, who had grown angrier as the day went on, surrounded my house and demanded to be let in! They were protesting against the Constitution which I had helped create, as well as my views on centralized government. Fortunately, my friends managed to calm them down and, eventually, they all went their separate ways. It was one of those days that will forever stay in my memory, and taught me a valuable lesson: No matter how heated a situation may get, it is always possible to find a peaceful resolution.
