### April 29 April 29th 1789 is a day that I will never forget. It was a special day, not only because it was my daughter's birthday, but it was the day I took office as the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. I had been nominated by President George Washington on September 11th, 1789 and confirmed by the Senate on September 15th. That day, I delivered my inaugural speech to Congress and I even introduced the concept of the national debt in my address to them. That day was also the first time I laid eyes on my trusty assistant, Oliver Wolcott whom I enlisted to help me with organizing the Treasury Department. It was also the day I spotted my future nemesis, Thomas Jefferson, wandering around the Capitol. Little did I know that our differing opinions would lead to heated debates and a rivalry that lasted many years! It was a busy and momentous day, it's nice to look back on it now with some nostalgia and a bit of humor. ;)
