### May 8 On May 8, 1792, I signed the *Charter of the Bank of the United States* into law. It was a crowning achievement of my career as Secretary of the Treasury, acting with the consent of Congress. In just five years, I had established a framework for financial stability and set the nation on a path to economic prosperity. The joyous occasion was one of celebration—I invited many of my closest colleagues in government, and we feasted like Kings! We even got a bit carried away when some of us decided to dance Jig in the middle of the banquet hall. It was a magical moment! As for me, I liked to think of it as a sign the nation’s finances were on the right track, but I suspect my friends just wanted an excuse to let loose at the end of a hard day’s work!
